State Government

RAN Fire Protection has extensive experience working with state governments throughout the USA. In New York, we’ve served 95% of OGS’s client agencies, demonstrating our deep understanding of state-level needs. Our reach extends beyond New York, as we’ve collaborated with multiple government offices at the state and municipal level nationwide

Corning Tower and Agency Building

Albany, NY

RAN Fire Protection Engineering was retained by the Office of General Services to provide fire protection engineering services on the Corning Tower and the four Agency Buildings.

Services Provided:

  • Code Analysis Fire Pump Design
  • Standpipe System Design
  • System Life Span Analysis

The previous fire protection system that was installed and completed in 1973 needed to be updated. Through an evaluation process, ultrasonic testing was performed on fire protection pipes in 207 different locations to identify the condition of the pipes and to determine their life expectancy. This allowed RAN to lower construction costs by replacing only the corroded pipes.

A code analysis was performed on each building to ensure the plans are up to NFPA standards and New York State Building Code. All upgrades meet NFPA 14 and NFPA 20 code requirements.

New automatic fire pumps needed to be implemented into the design, as the Corning Tower and Agency Buildings previous fire pumps were manual and only feed to the standpipe systems, not the sprinkler systems. The new upgrades involved automatic fire pumps and automatic transfer switches.

New York State Capitol Building

Albany, NY

The NYS Capitol Building houses the New York State Governor’s Office and the New York State Legislature.

Services Provided:

  • Code Analysis
  • Fire Pump Design
  • Fire Alarm System Design
  • Preservation of Historical Building

The building was completed in 1899 at a cost of $25 million, a modern day equivalent to roughly half a billion dollars. RAN Fire Protection Engineering, P.C. commenced work on the NYS Capitol project to address the existing level of fire protection.

The project involved the investigation of the existing fire pump arrangements to assess measures concerning flow problems. The design required the removal of three fire pumps, which allowed for consolidation into one fire pump with emergency backup power. The project also included the upgrading of the fire department hose valves on all eight standpipes throughout the building. The design increased the functionality and general reliability of the fire protection system in its entirety.

Wadsworth Laboratory

Albany, NY

RAN Fire Protection Engineering was engaged to develop a program
report to analyze and compile their findings for the reuse of the State
Department of Health facility at the Empire State Wadsworth Center. The
intended client agency was the State Education Department and NYS
Museum. The Wadsworth Center was to have a purpose-built renovation
to convert the space into an area to store artifacts from the NYS Museum amongst other items. After evaluating the existing fire protection systems, RAN made recommendations for fire alarm, sprinkler, and fire safety improvements based off the current conditions and findings. RAN Fire Protection Engineering was able to provide three options to help complete the agency’s goal of establishing a reliable purpose-built renovation.

Massena Sunmount DDSO

Massena, NY

RAN Fire Protection Engineering was retained to upgrade the NFPA Life Safety Code occupancy level for this residence from Board and Care Impractical to Health Care. RAN engineers upgraded the sprinkler system and fire alarm system. The fire alarm system was designed with a central station and includes carbon monoxide detection and two dedicated phone lines. RAN ensured that the kitchen facilities complied with the code, including protection of the kitchen enclosure and equipment. A UL 300A wet chemical fire extinguishing system was also designed and installed.

Capital District DDSO

Corinth, Hadley, Schuylerville, Easton, & Loudonville, NY

RAN Fire Protection Engineering provided lead fire protection engineering and consulting services for the Capital District DDSO projects in the Albany/Schenectady New York area. The scope of the project included ultrasonic testing of the sprinkler piping. The testing proved that four out of five buildings contained piping with a potential for failure due to internal corrosion. Four new sprinkler systems were designed. The installation occurred while maintaining full occupancy.

Size: 5 Buildings | Construction Cost: $340,000

Harbour House

Ulster, NY

During the initial feasibility study, it was found that sprinklers were not provided in the building and the fire alarm system needed to be updated. RAN Fire Protection Engineering designed a new sprinkler and fire alarm system for the home. RAN designed a pressure tank system to be put into the house for an automatic water supply to the sprinkler system. The pressure tank also prevented costly excavation for an underground water storage tank.

Size: 5,200 sqft | Construction Cost: $437,470

Lee Courthouse

New Haven, CT

RAN performed the fire protection design services for the Lee Courthouse Chambers and Circuit Library. The fire protection designs consisted of fire sprinklers and piping, as well as their layouts. The designs also contain hydraulic calculations to ensure that the systems worked properly and well with any existing systems that were still in the building.

Burlington Courts

Burlington, VT

RAN provided fire protection services to the building for the construction of the new Judge’s Chamber, as well as renovation of chamber and district court office space. The scope of services included the design and review of EFI drawings for the new Judges’ Chamber, as well as the district court office space.

Vermont State House

 Montpelier, VT

The Vermont State House is the one of the nation’s most meticulously preserved state capitol buildings. Nick Artim, RAN’s heritage protection expert, has been responsible for a number of fire engineering services including engineering minimally obtrusive, high sensitivity smoke detection and emergency notification systems, evaluating and identifying methods to improve the fire issuance of the historic fabric, and identifying methods to comply with contemporary egress standards without damaging the building’s historic integrity.

New Jersey Training School

Jamesburg, NJ

The New Jersey Training School is a boy’s juvenile detention center that currently holds approximately 200 juveniles. The juveniles range from 12 to 23 years old with a majority being 16 to 18. They are housed throughout 7 cottages and have access to 5 other buildings on site. The goal is to help young offenders through programs and experiences.

RAN Fire Protection Engineering designed a wet, a dry, and a pre-action sprinkler system to meet the needs of different areas of the building. Fire-rated walls, smoke partitions, and fire stopping details were coordinated with the fire suppression piping drawings. The double interlock pre- action system was designed to serve the boys living facilities, providing an injury and tamper proof sprinkler system.

Danville State Hospital

Danville, PA

Danville State Hospital in Danville, Pennsylvania, is a mental health facility that is operated by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare. The facility was also Pennsylvania’s 3rd public facility that housed mentally ill and disabled patients. There are 161 beds in the facility and the patients are taken care by the staff.

RAN Fire Protection Engineering provided services to the Danville State Hospital. The scope of services provided included sizing of pumps, tanks, and pipes, CAD files for necessary modifications, and AutoCAD and Revit files for architectural, structural and MEP designs.
