RAN Fire Protection Engineering is pleased to announce that Nick Artim has joined the firm, bringing more than 35 years of experience in fire protection engineering for cultural heritage properties.
Nick previously led the Heritage Protection Group, where he played a key role in advancing fire protection strategies for cultural heritage properties worldwide. His experience spans decades of work focused on protecting museums, historic structures, libraries, and archives through carefully engineered approaches that balance life safety, property protection, and preservation of historic fabric.
Over the course of his career, Nick has supported projects across the United States, Canada, and Europe, including work at nationally significant historic sites such as Mount Vernon and Monticello, as well as numerous facilities for the National Park Service.

In addition to his project work, Nick has contributed extensively to the advancement of fire protection practices for cultural heritage facilities. His work includes:
- Published author with contributions to WAAC, APT, and Landmarks Conservancy publications
- Contributor to national guidance on fire protection for heritage buildings
- Instructor with the International Foundation for Cultural Property Protection
This experience further strengthens RAN Fire Protection Engineering’s capabilities in cultural heritage fire protection, an area that requires specialized engineering approaches beyond conventional system design. These projects often involve integration of high-sensitivity detection technologies and water mist suppression systems to provide effective protection while limiting potential damage to historic materials.
“Protecting cultural heritage requires a different level of consideration,” said Artim. “The goal is not only life safety, but preservation of structures and collections that cannot be replaced.”
With Nick’s addition, RAN is better positioned to support complex heritage projects where fire protection must be carefully integrated without compromising historic materials or character.
