Correctional Facilities

RAN has extensive experience in correctional facilities. This is exemplified in New York State where RAN has completed projects for 93% of the currently open correctional facilities, 100% of maximum-security prisons, and 25 of 26 (96%) medium security prisons. The scopes of these projects include code consulting, variance application, master planning, and designing fire protection systems. RAN’s diverse experience has provided our team with the knowledge and tools necessary to provide results.

Correctional facilities have unique needs and requirements that need to be met to ensure the safety of everyone inside the facilities. RAN is well versed in these requirements and has performed code consulting and designing fire protection systems that are specific to correctional facilities. Fire protection systems need to be designed in a way that will prevent tampering and suicides. RAN has designed fire protection systems with techniques that keep inmates safe and secure.

Project Highlight

Elmira Correctional

Elmira, NY

Elmira Correctional Facility is a maximum-security state prison holding approximately 1,800 inmates. RAN Fire Protection Engineering replaced Elmira's existing standpipe system with a new Class III standpipe system in 11 of the facility’s buildings. A standpipe supply loop was installed, which supplied water from a new centrally located electric fire pump. A variance was obtained to incorporate the unique features of this historic construction and to meet code requirements. RAN was brought on at 65% completion of the project and there were no delays due to fire protection engineering.

Size: 11 Buildings; Construction Cost: $3.5 Million
